Swing into Spring - sell out!

The spring spectacular with Foo Foo and her delicious dance troop was a complete sell out at The Globe in Cardiff. The venue lived up to its growing reputation, the decor gave the evening a "Dusk till Dawn" feel. Keep an eye on Foo Foo's site for more content in due course. We were delighted to have Mansel Davies on Bass and Chris Thomas on keys for this show. Chris will be joining us at Blues Clubs, festivals coming up. We are also pleased to be joining Foo Foo and her team for a show at Fat Cats Revue Bar in Cardiff 25th June. More details to follow, meanwhile, with kind permission, here is a solo dance performed by Miss Cherie Amour (apols for the audio quality!). As you can see, memories of this extreme music, dance goddessness will remain for a long time.

Pro bass player Mal Preest joins SHM

We are really pleased to announce Mal Preest has joined SHM. Mal got a spanish guitar at 11 and played it as a four string until he could afford a bass. At 13 Mal's dad got him a Selmer Treble and Bass 50 ( as used by Luke today) along with a battered 4x12 cab and he was hooked! Mal turned pro at 17 and toured the UK and europe with names including Wales own Elvis, Shakin Stevens. Mal has also enjoyed plenty of Film and TV parts in stuff like the Bill, Eastenders, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and has also in S4C'S welsh language soap opera 'POBOL Y CWM'. Mal grew up musically listening to Lightnin' Hopkins, Lee Hooker, Mayal, Cream and has been looking to find a band with the right feel and soul of the Blues. We are delighted such a kick ass bass player Mal has joined SHM. Mal's kit includes a Fender Jazz bass USA 1967 he's had since he was 19, a Fender USA Stu Hamm Urge ii Signature Bass, Fender USA Precision 1997, Warwick Corvette Proline bass 1990, West german Fender Squire Jazz Bass Japan 1987 with Ampeg SVT 300 Classic 300 Watt Tube Head, Hughes and Kettner QC415 15" 400 watt Combo/Extension cab, Hughes and Kettner 900 Watt 4x10. Mal's first run out with us was last Sat at the Cross Keys. The crowd were determined to get as much high energy rock and roll as we had ready with Mal, so after several encores feedback was "Best Bass sound ever heard in there". Nuff said.

radio station featured SHM on BOB AND NORM'S BLUES SHOW 10-12pm every Monday. Norm flying solo, featured SHM's version of Stormy Monday along with Eva Cassidy, Gary Moore's in their track back feature. Stormy Monday influenced BBKing to play guitar. How cool that Norm saw it as "a sign" for SHM too. The sample played was performed live at the Dolls House Mar08. Playing at the Blues Dragon club has been an aspiration for SHM for a while, if you've been keepin tabs you'll know we felt the Mr Green style was us, but really going for it caused change in line up. Its been hard work but Ben and Nick are on it and the feel with these songs is great. To hear the appreciation from the discerning Blues Dragon audience was fantastic! and still plenty to improve on though, meanwhile here's the self penned / interpreted tunes, we slotted in between the Greeny/T bone Walker/Allman Bros and BBking inc Heartbreak HotelTears of a Woman Take my Timeand a fave song which with Nicks bass line well, av a listen, Soul Connection makes you wanna write some more for next time! About to play our first gig at Bluesdragon club, nerves were tingling. We brought our splendid 4x12 cabs, along with Bens drums miked up into the PA cabs, I think the audience were worried it was going to be high volume. So what better way to sooth those worries away than with the opening bars to Stormy Monday. Swiftly followed by a juicy addition to our set by the only man who made BBKing sweatReal World by Peter Green. Then it was time to get serious with a rendition of Little Wing.By request enjoy! Then we had the pleasure of being joined by the foxy vocals of Jane Williams, which was some kind of wonderful! It was great to kick off a run of gigs with a fab birthday celebration in Cwmdu. Congratulations Jean. Lovely to meet you and all your friends.

Joined by a certain ex dual lead TS Blues guitarist, there was the odd bit of guitar sparring, which as you can see got Jamie swept away by the sounds. Thanks Jamie for coming to play, only wish we had recorded it. Oh well, we will have to do it again sometime.

Looking fwd to gettin out for a good run of gigs including a slot at the famous Blues Dragon Club in June 12th. Meanwhile, we are delighted to be joined on drums by Mr Ben Tipler who brings real youth, energy and class to SHM's sound. Originally from Blackpool, cabaret capital of the UK, Ben took in orchestras, brass bands, the drumcorp in the cadet force, end of the pier shows (bitch of a load-in), and getting together with friends in the garage and knockin' out Hendrix/Beatles/Stones covers. Inevitably there were pantomimes too and one memorable job as drum roadie for Sir Norman Wisdom. Ben moved to London and gained a Bachelor of Music in performance and has over 500 gigs under his young belt along with a spell with the Worried Men . Wedlock brought a move to south wales in 2003 along with a son (Liam) and in March 08 this year a daughter (Caitlin). Rosie and Ben run a childcare setting in Cardiff so its kids, kids, kids all week long, which brings Ben to SHM for some escapism and what a fine way to spend a few hours a week, playing the finest blues compositions. Ben's set up is a Pearl Session Select kit 10" 12" 14" toms, 22" kick and a standard size Premier maple snare drum.
Cymbals are a mixture of Zildjian As Ks and a Sabian AAX ride. We are very lucky to have Ben escaping with us, hears why.Cheers SHM.

We are very sad to say Au revoir to Dave Hall who has brought a real Buddy richness on drums to SHM. Dave's off to Switzerland for a few months and we will miss him. We certainly wouldn't have created the sound without Dave.

This is the song he enjoyed most, eyes closed and flowing, It was Daves signature, a very Allman Bros version of the Tbone classic Stormy Monday. Cheers SHM

Manalishi at the Engineers

I heard that Jamie and Nick's ( from Jack the Biscuit) new band Manalishi were playing at the Engineers so thought I would bob in and have a listen. Jamie is a fellow Gibson fan and appears to have slotted a fat humbucker into an early 70's mini humbucker goldtop. The result is an unmistakable vintage tone. Nice !!!!! Always hoped one day we might graduate to a bit of Hendrix. Having said that I think it may take some time to get to know this gorgeous song and work out how SHM can do it justice. I think we just need to get out there and play it live, gauge reaction a few times to work this out.

So its going to get some airing,starting with a return trip to the Dolls House on the 8th March . Hoping to see some familiar faces there as we also have a couple of other surprises up our sleeve.

We kicked off 2008 in style at the Park Hotel. This is a beautiful building and with new stage a great gig. We are touched that so many familiar faces came to see us play.Cheers to new friends who are helping to organise gigs to look forward to this year. A party over in Bleanavon sounds like it will be great fun. We gave Need Your Love So Bad a run out, so far so good, but forgot to record the second set, so a sample will have to wait. Meanwhile Di has been tweeking the live sound and Colin's added some edge to his Bass, have a listen with a brief mix of Soul Connection, live at the Park Hotel. Cheers SHM

Rumble in the Jungle of lovin

We are indebted to the gentleman you see Mr Nick Broughton,. Nick kindly joined us last Friday at the Engineers. Indeed many may recognise him as the bass player with Jack the Biscuit. It was a great night, of course it was, its the Engineers. Great to see so many familiar faces having a great time. I don't know about you but I like to hear musicians being creative , in full flow. Given that Nick had never played this track before what a top job. It is one of our own songs and enjoy Nick in full free ride bass heaven ,cheers mate.

Tears of a Woman

We have given a Joe Bonamassa riff with its own share of Zep influence some SHM re-work to create, Tears of a Woman.

Perhaps this is the Blues of a helpless man or maybe the beauty of a woman, as seen in her eyes, with hope turned to sadness creating a tear exclusively whenever it is needed.
Tears of a woman was performed live at the Market Tafarn, Abergavenny on Sunday. It is a great vibe to play here for an early Sunday evening gig and so we slotted a fitting Peter Green Song into the set we havn't played for a while.

The Dog returns

Perhaps our greatest achievement to date was to hear that the opening riff of Sheepdog blues is now a ring tone. Yep a top guy at the Engineers has Sheepdog Blues as his ring tone. He was put out when we left it out of the set a couple of months ago. All was put right though on Sat with a special rendition which took the crowd by surprise as it turned into a bit of T-rex, She was dirty and sweet, clad in Black, must have been a collie. It was another classic Engineers gig, thanks to Dave for keeping this venue going, we look forward to another in Nov, Colin has to work away but guest bass Nick who currently plays in Jack the biscuit has offered to help. At least weve had the odd week of sunshine after the summer we missed and you know what happens to us blokes when the sun comes out, Di is even lucky enough to actually have a holiday! Its great when you meet new friends and musicians on the road.
We were asked to do a charity gig and bumped into Bruce and Mike, Jazz 2 Blues. Listening to these guys transports you to some sun kissed romantic beach with their layed back guitar. Only after a few minutes into their set at the Market Tafarn, Jaynie (the lovely music loving landlady) was taking about putting on some music / Tapas food supper type evening and that was even before they played Summertime! Their sets also include songs such as Autumn Leaves, Sunny, Misty and Need Your love So Bad (their own version of the Peter Green number). Summing up the atmosphere these guys create when they play, it feels like your on holiday. Go see them if you get chance. We hope they might join us again in the not too distant future for a gig warm up in the Monmouth area so watch this space. We havn't got any mp3 yet, maybe one day, a new gadget is on the way to improve the live capture quality and without it, we cant do these guys justice.

Every band needs a guy like Di, SHM's sound man and what a difference he makes. Not only does Di do a great job on the desk but he also mixs some uber cool, often forgotten blues rock tracks for your delightation in between sets. Di has played drums in the past with a number of bands in South Wales and also helps do the media for the Lizzy tribute shows, there might be one on the cards for South Wales, spot the t-shirt and guy on the right, its Mr Snowy White who used to play with Lizzy, nice tone, here is a gentle blues intro to a Lizzy fave, live at the Dolls House, Abertillery, if you want to hear the rest, come see us, its a classic blues rock moment.Cheers SHM

It was Mr Hendrix and the opening phrase to Voodoo child that gave the rest of us an idea what WaH-art really was about, so with some guitar effect policy relaxation, heres a bit of SHM WaH-art at the last gig. Thanks to the guys for laying down top bass and drums to paint this, a liitle exploration and a bum note in the mix too. Its the new end phrase to the Soul Connection studio track. On the left is Steve Byrne who you may know from a band called Tin Pan Alley. Steve played with us for a while and during this time he kindly donated one of his songs. Steve's still hittin em hard in a prog rock band called Also Eden. Good luck Steve! with this journey, I think they have even got gig in translvania!

The song he kindly donated to the SHM cause is called "The blues found me" and we gave it a run out at the Patriot gig. Thanks Steve, we really like playing it, especially the riff which just jumps out at you, hope you like our interpretation.

A weekend with plenty of Sax

Were up for a busy weekend with three gigs, Weve got Mr Chris Egan coming to join us on Sax up on a glorious hill near Garway on Friday so hope for a great party and a great sunset.

Then its off to the Railway Hotel at Crumlin on Sat. This venue gave us a great reception the last time we played and it will be good to catch up with everyone there again.

Then its Sunday and our first gig early eve between 4 and 6 at the Market Tavern, Abergavenny.

Well get some snaps or sounds to post in due course.

SHM Blues Rock the Patriot

It was a slightly nervous start, we hadn't played here before even though Sooty made us feel really welcome right from the moment we arrived, Thanks Sooty, especially for the after tour. But its amazing what throwing in the opening bars of Radar love can do to calm the nerves and warm the cockles of your valves. Here they are.

There is a great feel to this club, we were knackered the following day , Dave on drums was giving it some stick, he had the bruises to show for it. I think we suspected it was going to be a rockin night and by the time we hit "Get it hot" there really was no cooling down, well, everyone seemed to enjoy it. If you were there give us a shout with a comment below! Especially the guys how came special to see us, it would be great to hear from you. Another Blues rock moment when who appears but, Heather who works in the bank. Blues rock in a small world!

Its a new day and a new dawn for Sherbet Mandao , weve finally come to think that the name is a tricky one, unforgettable, impossible to get right ! We have been billed as
Sherbet Mondays, Shove it up YA DAY O, Sherbert Mondoa

and just about every other combination you can possibly think of except Sherbet Mandao. So as of today we are also adopting , drum rolllllllllllll "SHM" - abbreviation of sherbet mandao. Mark is feeling good about this as it is an opportunity for new logo and posters. So COME ON lets Blues rock with some SHM or SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION, which is the official, cool definition of SHM and exactly what Marks' valve amp would do to his cones if he could get it turned up past 3 !!!!
